FAQ's - Relaxers & Color
COLOR FADES ON RELAXED HAIR BETWEEN RETOUCHES
Client’s relaxed hair loses haircolor too quickly, due to hair’s porosity.
Fading haircolor needs to be refreshed between retouches. Try Jazzing Sheer Haircolor. Jazzing has no ammonia or peroxide, and can be used immediately after a relaxer.
- Choose a Jazzing shade with the same or similar Level and tone as your client’s haircolor formula.
- Apply protective creme around the hairline. Then apply Jazzing to damp hair. Take 1/2-inch sections and keep it off the scalp.
- Process up to 30 minutes. (NOTE: Heat is not recommended for processing Jazzing on chemically treated/porous hair.) Strand test frequently for accurate timing and predictable haircolor results.
- Rinse, shampoo and condition.
FEAR OF PERMANENT HAIRCOLOR ON RELAXED HAIR
Many of your clients have relaxed hair and you want to offer them a permanent haircolor or lightening service, but myths about relaxers and permanent haircolor hold you back.
There is no reason to hesitate if basic guidelines are followed. Textures & Tones and Beautiful Collection Permanent were specifically designed for use on related hair. Miss Clairol offers a wide variety of color choices.
Important Guidelines
- Always wait one week and one shampoo after a relaxer service before applying permanent haircolor. This ensures that there is no scalp sensitivity or discomfort for the client.
- Evaluate the porosity and elasticity of the hair. If the hair shows signs of breakage, permanent haircolor is not recommended.
- To choose the correct volume of developer for relaxed hair, use the following guide:
- to match, deepen, deposit haircolor: 10 volume
- to lighten (see #4 below): 20 volume
- to cover gray (less than 30% gray): 10 volume
- to cover gray (more than 30% gray): 20 volume
- If lighter color results are desired, choose a shade up to two Levels lighter. For example, if using Miss Clairol to achieve a red hot medium brown on a natural Level 2 (dark brown), use Miss Clairol 204RR Reddest Copper Red (a Level 4 shade) with 20-volume developer.
- Relaxed hair usually requires less processing time. (Generally, 20 to 30 minutes versus the 30-45 minutes required for non-relaxed hair.) Strand test frequently to determine accurate color results.
NEUTRALIZING AN OFF-TONE AFTER RELAXER
Client’s haircolor has a "greenish" haze after a relaxer service.
A semi-permanent haircolor, like Beautiful Collection, in a warm tone will safely neutralize any off-tones that appear after relaxing. Its new conditioning formula will also moisturize and soften the hair.
- Finish the relaxer service by thoroughly rinsing out the neutralizing shampoo and gently towel-blotting hair.
- Select a Beautiful Collection shade with a Red, Red-Orange or Red-Gold base:
- B15W Dark Warm Brown
- B13W Medium Warm Brown
- B09W Light Reddish Brown
- B17W Rosewood Brown
- B14W Cedar-Red Brown
- Apply color directly from the bottle, gently and evenly.
- Process up to 25 minutes. Heat is NOT recommended immediately after any chemical service. Check every 5 minutes for desired color results.
- Rinse well. Do not shampoo.
RELAXERS DON’T STRAIGHTEN ENOUGH/HAIR IS DULL
Your relaxer clients complain that their hair isn’t straight enough, or it’s overly dry.
Excessive dryness due to harsh relaxers is a common complaint. Use a relaxer that provides moisturizing during processing and protects hair from further damage.
Whether your client wants completely straight hair or just a mild texturizing, Textures & Tones Sodium Hydroxide Relaxer protects hair and delivers beautiful straightening results. It contains the revolutionary complex Elasticom, which penetrates the hair shaft to leave hair healthy, silky-soft and strong. The Textures & Tones relaxer is available in Mild, Regular and Super strengths.
RELAXED, COLOR-TREATED HAIR APPEARS DULL AND DRY
Hair that is relaxed and permanently colored often appears dull and dry.
Clients with both relaxed and color-treated hair need moisture replenishment. By providing personalized, intense consultation for each client, you can educate them on the importance of proper hair maintenance. Here are a few important topics you should discuss:
- Always reinforce that they wait at least one week between chemical services.
- Recommend an ultra-moisturizing shampoo to help restore hair’s healthy moisture balance, improve elasticity, and add shine. ( Textures & Tones Ultra-Moisture Shampoo is a great example.)
- Deep conditioning is a must; it fortifies dull, lackluster hair. Textures & Tones 1-Minute Reconstructive Conditioner nourishes hair and gives it a silky, healthy sheen without a greasy, heavy feel.
- Tailor your consultation for each dual-service client; you’ll see the difference it makes. Create a specific and individual treatment plan for each client.
